Care & Daily Life

In our small homes, care partners stay close, relationship grow naturally, and support is always present, day and night.

Care That Is Present, Personal, and Steady

Care at Villas at Killearn Lakes is woven into daily life — not delivered on a schedule or from a distance.

Here, care does not feel clinical or transactional. It feels familiar.

Because each villa is a small home supported by one of the region’s strongest staffing presences, Care Partners are present throughout the day and night. They have the time to build real relationships, notice subtle changes early, and respond thoughtfully rather than reactively.

There are no long hallways.

No rotating cast of strangers.

No feeling of being “managed.”

Instead, care unfolds naturally within the rhythm of home. Support is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week — in an environment where details are noticed and relationships truly matter.

Families often tell us the difference is not just visible.
It is felt.

Care here is not delivered to people.

It is carried out with them.

This is the Villas difference.

Daily Life That Feels Like Home
Because It Is

Support, comfort, and routine come together in real homes designed for ease, dignity, and connection.

Daily life does not revolve around announcements, schedules, or crowded common areas. It happens around the kitchen table. In comfortable living rooms. Through familiar routines that bring steadiness to each day.

Residents move freely within their homes, choose quiet moments or conversation, and experience care that blends naturally into life rather than interrupting it.

For many families, this is where the difference becomes clear — in the calm they see, the familiarity they feel, and the sense of ease their loved one regains.

Care You Can Count On

Behind the warmth of home is thoughtful structure and consistent clinical guidance, so families can feel confident that care is both personal and well supported.

Care Partners provide hands-on support day and night, including assistance with daily living and medication management. Because homes are small, changes in condition or behavior are often noticed early and addressed quickly.

Each resident is supported by an individualized Life Enrichment Plan that guides care, engagement, and daily rhythms. These plans evolve as needs change — allowing care to adapt without disrupting the stability of home.

The result is assisted living that is dependable, responsive, and quietly attentive.

Licensed nurses provide ongoing clinical guidance and are closely involved in monitoring changes in health and condition. Families can feel confident that clinical needs are not only supported, but proactively monitored.

Memory Care & Dementia Support

Care rooted in understanding the person, not the diagnosis

Designed for Calm, Familiar Living

Dementia care requires more than supervision.
It requires understanding — of the person, not just the diagnosis.

At Villas at Killearn Lakes, memory care is thoughtfully woven into daily life within secure, small homes designed to feel calm and familiar. Elders live alongside consistent Care Partners who truly know their routines, preferences, and subtle changes — often noticing shifts early and adjusting support gently rather than reactively.

This steady, relationship-based approach creates something families often say they haven’t felt in a while:

Relief

When care feels personal and predictable, anxiety softens. Trust grows. And connection remains possible — even as needs evolve.

Our dedicated Dementia Care Specialist strengthens this foundation. Certified in the Virtual Dementia Tour, she trains our team to better understand the sensory and emotional experience of dementia so care is delivered with deeper empathy and less distress. Dementia awareness is woven into team development and shared with families, creating a circle of understanding around each resident.

We also partner with Florida State University’s Social Work and College of Fine Arts programs to offer emotionally supportive experiences — from guided conversation to creative expression — honoring the whole person, not just physical needs.

What Dementia Support Looks Like

Rather than overstimulation or rigid structure, daily life is guided by familiarity and thoughtful attentiveness.

In our homes, this means:

  • A secure, small-home setting designed for comfort and safety
  • Consistent Care Partners who know behaviors, rhythms, and preferences
  • Early, thoughtful adjustments as needs change
  • Dementia-informed training for team members and shared education for families
  • Access to social work and supportive therapies when needed
  • Engagement focused on connection, not activity for activity’s sake

In larger settings, dementia care is often shaped by structure and scale.

In our homes, it is shaped by relationships and quiet understanding.

Our Environment and Model was intentionally designed for dementia support.

Dining and Nutrition

Real food, made at home

At Villas at Killearn Lakes, food is part of daily life, not a scheduled service or a production kitchen. Meals are prepared in each home’s kitchen, where cooking happens in familiar surroundings and mealtimes can follow appetite, routine, and preference.

This is home style dining, real food, prepared in each Villa’s kitchen, with the warmth and familiarity that comes with it.

Guided by preference, supported by nutrition

Menus are shaped by the people who live here. A dedicated Food Engagement Coordinator gathers input, preferences, and favorites so meals reflect familiar tastes and personal history. Menus are thoughtfully planned and reviewed with a local dietitian to support nutrition while preserving choice and enjoyment.

We also hold regular Elder Council meetings, where Elders and family members are invited to share feedback, ideas, and preferences. Meals matter here, and these conversations help ensure dining continues to reflect what residents actually enjoy.

Flexible, relaxed, and shared in the way each person prefers

Meals often become natural moments of connection. Some Elders enjoy lingering at the table, while others prefer quieter meals or a different setting. Both are respected. Because each home is small and familiar, dining remains relaxed, unhurried, and adaptable, with help close by when needed.

Family members are always welcome to join for meals, bring favorite dishes, and share special moments around the table.

The term “small house” has developed as a way to describe the relative size difference between a traditional long-term care facility and a home built to a more residential scale. Typically, there are several “small house” homes situated in a neighborhood. The neighborhood forms a community that is operated as a single site, yet with each home having its own resident-driven character and house rules. A team of care partners provides assistance with activities of daily living, meals, housekeeping, and other services to all of its residents. The small house movement began in nursing home settings and has begun to spread to assisted living communities like Villas at Killearn Lakes. It is often considered to be a subset of a larger philosophy of care known as the “household model.”

Since the goal of this model is to create home in every sense of the word, a neighborhood is an important way to live out that reality. Most of us in bedroom communities like Northeast Tallahassee live in neighborhoods for much of our lives. When we need a little extra help it’s nice to be able to keep living in ways that are familiar to us. Receiving home care services in one’s original home can sometimes breed isolation. While relocation can be difficult when more assistance is needed, moving to another neighborhood that has built-in services to help us age in community can help ease the transition.

Elders of the Villas at Killearn Lakes are individuals who require support with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, medication management, or meal preparation but do not need the intensive medical care provided in a skilled nursing facility. Elders typically include older adults or individuals with physical or cognitive impairments who value a safe, supportive environment that promotes independence while offering access to personalized assistance when needed. Eligibility is often determined through assessments of physical, cognitive, and emotional needs to ensure the facility is a suitable fit.

Villas at Killearn Lakes has (3) All-inclusive rates based on care needs, Essential, Moderate, and Extensive. Please see our cost page for more details. Many long- term care insurance policies provide coverage for assisted living and memory care services, and will be accepted for payment by Villas at Killearn Lakes. Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial health care plans typically do not pay for these services..

The Villas at Killearn Lakes is operated by a dedicated and diverse team of professionals, each bringing expertise from a variety of disciplines to ensure the highest quality of care and life in our neighborhood setting. Our leadership includes an experienced Executive Director, compassionate nursing staff, a dynamic Social Engagement and Activities Director, a skilled Chef Coach, and a specialized Dementia Care Specialist.
